The Greater Hartford Shakespeare Festival presents Romeo and Juliet as Capital Classics celebrates its 25th anniversary season. This is Shakespeare's well-known tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers, which will run for three weekends (July 23 through August 9, 2015) outdoors on the grounds of the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT.
The UChicago Alumni Club of Connecticut is sponsoring the performance on August 9th, including a lecture by Dr. Humphrey Tonkin, University of Hartford Professor of the Humanities and President Emeritus. Dr. Tonkin has lectured widely on English literature, languages, and international studies. His publications include two books on the poetry of Edmund Spenser (1972 and 1989), scholarly articles on 16th-century literature, edited volumes on language and related topics, and articles and monographs on international language problems, language and society, and language teaching. He teaches Shakespeare and theatre history for the English Department and the Theatre Division of the Hartt School, and his pre-show lectures are erudite and informative.
A space will be marked for us in front of the stage where people can sit on blankets and low chairs. If you prefer a higher seat, we ask that you sit further back and mingle during the preshow and intermission. If weather forces the performance inside (usually only if there are high winds and lightning, or a steady heavy rain) we will have a prime row reserved for us. Tickets are discounted from group prices for this date only; if you attend on other dates, you will have to pay the box office price.
- Professor lecture at 4:30 p.m.
- Performance begins at 5:30 p.m.
